Extract Audio from a Video Using VLC Media Player
In this guide, we'll use VLC media player to convert a video file into an MP3 audio file. VLC media player is a free and open-source cross-platform multimedia player that can play (and convert) most multimedia files including video, audio, and various streaming protocols.
Installing VLC Media Player
Follow these steps to safely download and install VLC media player:
-
Visit the official VideoLAN website: https://www.videolan.org
-
Click the large "Download VLC" button on the main page. This is the official download button.
-
You will be redirected to a download page where your download will begin automatically after a few seconds. If it doesn't, click the "click here" text link on the download page.
Warning
Be cautious of misleading advertisements that may appear on the download page. Do not click any of the "Download" or "START" buttons (marked as "ads" in the image below).
-
Once downloaded, run the VLC installer executable.
-
In the installer window, it's recommended to change the "Select the type of install" dropdown to "Minimum". This will prevent VLC from becoming the default app for other media files on your computer. Customize the installation as desired.
-
Follow the remaining prompts to finish installing VLC.
-
(Optional) The VideoLAN website offers donation options (€4.00 or $5.00 buttons) if you'd like to support this free, open-source project.
